Earth Mother Sarasota City Hall

Earth Mother - Sarasota City Hall - By: Jack Cartlidge

Earth Mother at Sarasota City Hall

In the heart of Sarasota, an iconic sculpture has been given new life by Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts. The striking Earth Mother, a cement sculpture by the late Jack Cartlidge, now stands renewed outside Sarasota City Hall, showcasing its original beauty and symbolic presence.

Over the years, exposure to the elements took its toll on this significant piece, leaving its surface weathered and bleached. Recognizing the need for restoration, the team at Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts took on the task of bringing Earth Mother back to its former glory.

A key part of the restoration involved applying a Japanese Brown Patina, a technique that enhances the depth and richness of the sculpture’s surface. This patina not only revives the visual appeal of the cement but also serves as a protective layer, ensuring longevity against Sarasota’s challenging climate. The meticulous attention to detail and historical sensitivity displayed in this restoration underscores Cartlidge and Colson’s dedication to preserving Sarasota’s artistic heritage.
