Jim Davidson Statues Get New Life
On Casey Key in Sarasota, Florida, a collection of Jim Davidson’s sculptures has been given a remarkable revival. With the restoration work of Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts, these beloved sculptures now stand rejuvenated.
Davidson’s sculptures, known for their intricate details and expressive forms, had endured years of exposure to the elements and salt air. However, because the metal used in these pieces was not solid bronze, a traditional patina was not a viable option for restoration. Recognizing this challenge, Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts devised an innovative solution: a custom faux finish that perfectly replicates the look of bronze while providing superior durability.
To ensure the sculptures’ longevity, the team applied a marine-grade UV protective coating over the faux bronze finish. This specialized sealant shields the artworks from the harsh coastal environment, preventing damage from sun exposure, salt air, and humidity. The result is a breathtaking transformation that not only honors the original vision but also secures the sculptures’ beauty for years to come.
