Turning Sarasota Into The Emerald City

Nobody’s Listening - By: Jack Cartlidge

Sarasota has long been a city known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and Sarasota School of Architecture. Now, with the dedicated efforts of our team at Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts, the city’s artistic legacy shines again.

We just finished the restoration of three copper sculptures located at Sarasota City Hall by the late Jack Cartlidge, a celebrated sculptor whose works have become landmarks around Sarasota. These sculptures—Nobody’s Listening, The Pioneer Family, and The Guardian—stand as enduring symbols of community, resilience, and historical reflection. Over the years, exposure to Florida’s harsh elements and salt air had left them weathered and in need of care. Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts undertook the challenge to restore these iconic pieces to their former selves.

The restoration process was meticulous and required an intricate understanding of the copper medium, patination, and structural integrity. Each sculpture presented unique challenges, from corrosion removal to reapplying protective coatings that would withstand Sarasota’s coastal climate. The deep, rich tones of the sculptures now echo their original artistic vision while ensuring their longevity for generations to come.
