Restoring Legacy: The Sentinel and The Monolith - Sapphire Shores - By: Jack Cartlidge

Sapphire Shores is a neighborhood in Sarasota, Florida that's located south of the Ringling Museum. The neighborhood is part of the Museum District, which includes the Ringling Museum, Ca' d'Zan, and the Asolo Repertory Theater. The two copper sculptures by Jack Cartlidge in Sapphire Shores have been given new life by Cartlidge and Colson Architectural Arts, The Sentinel and The Monolith now stand restored, reaffirming their place in Sarasota’s rich artistic culture.

Jack Cartlidge, a sculptor known for his bold and thought-provoking works, created The Sentinel and The Monolith as testaments to strength, resilience, and artistic expression. Over time, exposure to Florida’s coastal climate took its toll on these copper sculptures.

The restoration process involved carefully cleaning the sculptures to remove oxidation and applying protective patinas to safeguard them from future environmental damage. Every step was executed with deep respect for Cartlidge’s original vision, ensuring that the sculptures retained their unique patina and character.

The revitalization of The Sentinel and The Monolith is a testament to Sarasota’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. These sculptures, standing proudly in Sapphire Shores, continue to inspire residents and visitors alike, reminding them of the city’s deep-rooted connection to the arts.
